Shopping wise, I find the most useful and reasonably priced shopping places for Expats are Centerpoint (Somerset MRT), Rafflescity (City Hall MRT), Plaza Singapura (Dhoby Ghaut MRT), Vivocity (Harbourfront MRT), Wheelock Place (Orchard MRT). Paragon (Orchard MRT) is great for designer boutiques, the good quality supermarket and Da Paolo deli in the basement, and most Expats love Tanglin Mall off Orchard Road. Stores like Takashimaya, Marks & Spencers, Tangs, Robinsons, Metro and Isetan are useful department stores selling pretty much everything. Teenagers like The Heeren, The Orchard Cathay, Wisma Atria and Plaza Singapura as there are lots of youth oriented funky stores, cinemas, eateries and places to hang out.

For perfect gifts that don't cost a fortune, go to the market area at China Town (Chinatown MRT) as there are many quirky boutiques selling lovely silk slippers, cashmere pashminas and silk / woven handbags, and also Lings Oriental Department Store and the boutiques at Holland Village Shopping Centre. For something more classy and pricey, Shanghai Tang in Ngee Ann City Shopping Centre is a good bet with lovely clothing for all the family, quirky household items and gifts.

Lucky Plaza and Sim Lim Square are the best priced places for electrical goods. Apple store Wheelock Place is always popular.

For grooming, Essensuals Hairdressers in Bugis 6333-0039 are experienced with Expat hair texture, and you'll get good value cuts (especially with hairdressers Pauline and Bryan); alternatively Vencent at Urban Hair 6737-7813. For colour try Jackie at Toni & Guy 6835-4556; Anna at Le Salon 6738-8006; or Susan (mobile home service) 9438-8936; Snails do the best nails at Wheelock Place 6738-0100, and Spa Botanica at Sentosa Hotel 6371-1318 remains the best day spa in Singapore in my view.

For women and baby medical needs go to:-
Women's Centre at Raffles Hospital (Dr Lee I-Wuen is popular)
